This exhibition displays the work of Pat Hobaugh and Morgan Sims, which features the abundant use of children’s toys, examining the effects they’ve had on the development of the individual and society. Hobaugh’s paintings focus on the idea of the ubiquitous Hero found in religion, war, politics and mythology. The staged scenes, seemingly set up for a play, are a window into the world where a child’s mythos of heroes and villains are formed. Sim’s prints demonstrate our society’s tendency to anthropomorphize animals through the forms of children’s toys, animation and advertising and the way these animals are appropriated to accommodate the way we view the world. Although this commentary on child development and its consequences raises questions for the adult viewer to ponder, the works in this exhibition are appealing and accessible to children and strives to get young viewers excited about fine art.
