Jazzworks Dance Company

Fri, Feb 5 | 7:30 PM
Capitol Theater |
$16 - $28
Founded in 1980, Jazzworks Dance Company has earned a reputation as one of the gems
of Madison’s performing arts landscape. Sophisticated, technically proficient, and
tremendously entertaining (Wisconsin State Journal), Jazzworks carves a unique niche in
the world of dance.  Their athletic, yet artistic performances are passionate and uplifting,
and appeal to audiences of all ages.
Jazzworks will present an evening of jazz, modern and contemporary ballet works at the
Overture Center’s Capital Theater on Friday, February 5, 2010 at 7:30 pm.  Jazzworks
will premiere the following works:
Rise – Featuring an array of movement qualities and music by Safri Duo, Trevor Rabin
and Les Tambours du Bronx, this show opener by choreographer Carol Marion Ceniti is
graceful, athletic, powerful, fluid and sassy.
The Promise of a New Day - Choreographed by Zach De Vries and set to the music of
the Holly Cole Trio, this lyrical jazz piece implores us to face every new day with hope
and optimism.
Elvis is in the Building! – Choreographer Arianne Kluesner fuses Ballet with dance club
funk to create a light, wildly entertaining romp set to the music of Elvis Presley.
The concert will also feature:
A World Without Walls – Choreographers Carol Marion Ceniti, Zach De Vries and
Arianne Kluesner have collaborated on this 32 minute work that weaves together a
variety of dance forms; music from around the world; 40 young dancers (ages7-18); and
Jazzworks Dance Company!  Until now, the concert dance performance
opportunities for young dancers in our area have been ballet-based.  In ballet
productions, local dancers perform alongside their peers and watch professionals perform
variations.  A World Without Walls is a unique opportunity for area dancers to train with
and perform alongside local professional dancers in a work that features a variety of
dance forms.  This year’s presentation of A World Without Walls features an exuberant
new “Bollywood” section.  Jazzworks has recruited 40 area dancers ranging in age,
income level and dance technique to train and perform with us.

Unshakable Anguish – Choreographed by Zach De Vries, and set to a forceful score by
Michael Nyman, this modern jazz work is an exploration of the torment of being caught
in a nightmare that you cannot wake up from.  Whether slumbering or awake, the
nightmare consumes your spirit, pulling you deeper into despair.
Love Delirium - Choreographer Zach De Vries utilizes music by Imogen Heap for this
contemporary, athletic duet which explores the ever-changing emotions of a lasting
kinship.  The journey of love can be challenging as well as rewarding and if people help
each other navigate through the twists and turns of passion, a mutually amorous harmony
can be achieved.
Borrowed Baroque – Set to the grand music of James Howard, guest choreographer
Sam Watson strikes again with a comedic spoof about the Baroque style of dance.
This project was supported by a grant from the Dane County Cultural Affairs
Commission with additional funds from the American Girl's Fund for Children,
The Evjue Foundation and the Overture Foundation.
