2009/10 High School Productions
In the 2009-10 school year, 22 participating schools and 1 community theater had their high school musicals reviewed by a panel of educators, theater experts and industry professionals. Based on the reviewers’ comments and tabulations, productions and individuals received awards in specific categories at ceremony held at Overture Center on Sunday, June 6, 2010. The ceremony also featured performances and production numbers from award winners in several categories. Approximately 350 students performed and over 80 awards were distributed.

Bye Bye Birdie is a stage musical with a book by Michael Stewart, lyrics by Lee Adams, and music by Charles Strouse. Originally titled Let's Go Steady, the satire on American society is set in 1958. The story was inspired by the phenomenon of popular singer Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the army in 1958. The rock star character's name, "Conrad Birdie," is word play on the name of Conway Twitty. Twitty is known as a country music star but also was one of Presley's rock 'n' roll rivals.

Thoroughly Modern Millie is a high-spirited musical romp that has all of New York dancing the Charleston! It's the zany new 1920's musical that has taken Broadway by storm! Taking place in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It's a New York full of intrigue and jazz, a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Based on the popular movie, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers.

Popular basketball player, Troy Bolton, and brainy beauty, Gabriella Montez, are two teenagers from two totally different worlds who meet singing karaoke at a resort's New Year's Eve party. Back from holiday break at East High School, Troy is surprised to learn that Gabriella is a new student there. They quickly become close friends and accidentally audition for the school musical. At the same time, drama queen Sharpay Evans, and her twin brother Ryan, the Co-Presidents of the drama club use drastic measures to prevent Troy and Gabriella from beating them out in call-backs. Will the peer pressure of their cliques keep Troy and Gabriella from pursuing their passions?

The Viking Players directed by Mrs. Deb Fox and Mrs. Mary Stelter are proud to present the Fall 2009 Musical: Disney's Beauty and the Beast. This year's cast and crew will near 100 Parkview High School Students; many of whom have participated in previous shows. Without the dedication of all the people involved it would be impossible to put on a show of this caliber. This is true not only of the students who are acting and singing, but also the students who work behind the scenes to make sure that those on stage have everything they need from hair and make-up to building the set.

The Prince is giving a ball and you are invited! Led by a strong group of seniors, this cast of 40 and crew of 10 bring high energy to the stage. Saturday afternoon there is a special performance at 2:00 P.M. Young Princes and Princesses will have story time with Cinderella, the Queen, or the Fairy Godmother starting at 1:00 P.M. We hope that the young and the young at heart join us for this classical show.

The Music Man

The Music Man is a musical with book, music, and lyrics by Meredith Willson. The show is based on a story by Willson and Franklin Lacey. The plot concerns con man Harold Hill, who poses as a boys' band organizer and leader and sells band instruments and uniforms to naive townsfolk before skipping town with the cash. In River City, Iowa, prim but progressive Marian the librarian sees through him, but when Hill helps her younger brother, Marian begins to fall in love with Harold. Harold, in turn falling for Marian, risks being caught to win her.
Lake Mills High School
Les Miserables

Based on Victor Hugo's 1862 novel of the same name, it is set in early 19th-century France and follows the intertwining stories of a cast of characters as they struggle for redemption and revolution. The main characters are joined by an ensemble that includes student revolutionaries, factory workers and others. On October 8 2006, the show celebrated its 21st anniversary on London's West End and became the longest-running West End musical in history, reaching 9,500 performances. The production continues to this day at London's Queen's Theatre. The show is now in its 25th year.
Palmyra-Eagle High School

Come join the Palmyra-Eagle School District and Drama Department as they present the musical "Peter Pan". The musical, based on James M. Barrie's play, will take you from the safety and stability of the Darling Nursery to Neverland - a place of fantasy and danger! With a cast and crew of over 65 students, Palmyra-Eagle is looking forward to creating a wonderful evening of make-believe for its audience.

Into the Woods is an enchanting musical that weaves familiar childhood tales together with a new story of a childless Baker and his Wife, who drive the action of the musical by attempting to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child. This powerful musical will make you laugh, cry, think, and believe in the magic of fairy tales again - it is not-to-be missed fun!

Chicago is a Kander and Ebb musical set in Prohibition-era Chicago. The music is by John Kander with lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice, and the concept of the "celebrity criminal". The musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about actual criminals and crimes she had reported on.

Godspell (an archaic spelling of the word gospel) is a 1970 musical by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak. It opened off Broadway on May 17, 1971, and has played in various touring companies and revivals many times since. Several cast albums have been released over the years and one of its songs, "Day By Day" from the original cast album, reached #13 on the Billboard pop singles chart in the summer of 1972.
River Valley High School - Spring Green

A down-and-out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon "Audrey II" grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealed to be an alien creature poised for global domination! Featuring a man-eating plant, Seymour, Audrey, and the three "muses" that help move the story along, this musical showcases our singing as well as character through its over-the-top roles and stunning harmonies. The River Valley Students have a great time with this comedy!

Nightclub singer Reno Sweeney and Public Enemy #13 Moonface Martin aid Billy in his quest to win Hope. The musical introduced such songs as "Anything Goes," "You're the Top," and "I Get a Kick Out of You."

Fame - The Musical follows the class of 1984 on a four-year journey through the famed New York City High School of the Performing Arts. This show ran off-broadway at the Little Schubert Theatre from October 7, 2003 through June 27, 2004 for 264 performances and 40 previews.
Waunakee High School
Once On This Island

Once on This Island is a one-act musical with a book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. Based on the novel My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy, the musical is a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid set in the French Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. The show also includes elements of the Romeo and Juliet story.
