Our Mexico, Our Roots

A mother and daughter team up to present photographs of their hometown, Querétaro.  These works shy away from the conventions of photographs taken by and for tourists and aim to reveal the culture and traditions of this historical city in central Mexico.

Respite = Relief: 30 Years of Building Resiliency in Children through Art

The Respite Center

In honor of its 30th anniversary, the Respite Center presents an exhibition of art made by the children who have come through its doors.  The Respite Center is Madison’s 24-hour child-care center for families who are experiencing hard times.   The artworks on display have helped children express their feelings and recover from stress.

From China to Madison: Crossing Cultural Bridges

Madison’s Blackhawk Middle School partners with the Tongren English Teachers College in rural southwestern China to answer the question, “What do you want the world to know about your city and your life?”  Students from both schools use photography and text to capture the essence of life in their community, exploring the similarities and differences between Chinese and American cultures.

SEED: A Passion for Growing

artsTRIBE 

 This exhibit completes a two-year collaboration between artsTRIBE and the Dane County Farmers’ Market (DCFM).  Partnering with various DCFM vendors, artsTRIBE members draw on the farmers’ lives, work, and produce for inspiration, subject matter, and media, using the growing process as a metaphor for the creative process.

Southwestern Wisconsin Gourd Patch

The Southwestern Wisconsin Gourd Patch exhibits gourd art in all its possible forms—from bowls to balafons, masks to musical instruments, carvings to sculptures—bringing to the public the possibilities of the gourd as fine art.  This group of self-taught and fine-arts professionals have gravitated to the gourd as canvas yet use various multi-media processes, including such techniques as pyrography, watercolor, inks and stains, carving, coiling, sculpting, oils and acrylics.

Spring Art Tour Preview

Mount Horeb Area Arts Association

The Mount Horeb Area Arts Association (MHAAA) Spring Art Tour is an annual event during which studios across Blue Mounds, Black Earth, Verona, Cross Plains, Mazomanie and towns in between are free and open to the public.  This preview exhibition of the artists participating in the 2009 Spring Art Tour presents a beautiful range of fine arts including painting in all media, photography, sculpture, ceramics, pottery, wood carving, cabinet making, origami, glass blowing and jewelry making.

This recently engaged couple presents a series of sculptural works that focuses on the complexities of connecting two individuals as well as the ability of an artist’s work to connect with the viewer.  The two Madison-based artists share a home and a studio where collaboration occurs on a daily basis.  Through differing mediums of steel, clay and wood, Vedro and Yeager create complimentary work that references similar themes of vulnerability, armor and access to interior spaces.

Firecracker Studios

Firecracker Studios promotes the work of local artists by throwing “traveling side shows” around Wisconsin. They plan on sending out a call for artists to submit thought provoking, unpredictable art.  They will choose work done with unusual techniques and unusual subjects.

Gallery II 

Amy Newell & Jason Ruhl: What about the Kitchen Sink

Two local artists team up to present a series of mixed media collages using books, hand-printed images, and created on a letterpress. A juxtaposition of familiar and abstracted imagery that is comical, intriguing and puzzling.

Gallery III 

Northside Artists Group: Reflections of the Northside

Twenty-five north side Madison artists create paintings, photographs, mosaics, sculptures, metal works, picasettes and mixed media focusing on the neighborhood they call home, where they live, work and play. The exhibit will enable the greater community to explore this environmentally, culturally and socioeconomically diverse community through visual arts.

Madison’s Women Glass Art

An overview of glass art created by local women who are known around the country. The pieces reflect the nature of glass artists of Madison, part of a thriving arts community in Wisconsin. Glass tiles, paintings and their 3D blown glass counterparts make for a colorful, dynamic display.

Fresh Hot Press

A range of student work comes from Fresh Hot Press, a student printmaking club founded by UW-Madison graduate students. More than forty club members collaborate to share their work with the public.

Fabricated Realms

Two local artist couples create ornate, fantastical and narrative art. They reach out to viewers of all ages and interests with paintings, drawings, digital prints and art quilts, creating a rich, diverse exhibition of whimsical imagery.

Gallery II

Cornucopia: Crazy

Member run, non-profit arts and wellness organization, Cornucopia, pursues art as a way of enhancing the lives of people with mental health concerns. The theme “crazy” is explored and transformed into art and poetry, permitting a perceived weakness to become a communication to the public at large.

 

Gallery III

The Watergate Collective: New Order

UW-Madison undergraduate art students create an exhibit that reinvestigates the idea of seriality and sequence in current society, as evinced by the Minimalist movement. Artists will be given a statement and asked to create a number of pieces reacting to the statement.

 

3-week intermittent season between summer and fall

MaOAS: Madison area Open Art Studios

Madison-area Open Art Studios celebrates and illuminates local artists by providing the general public with intimate access to 150+ art studios for one weekend in October. The event kicks off with a three-week exhibition with work by each artist, allowing the public to view the collections of artists and make selections of which studios they plan on visiting during the open studios event.

New Grounds Collective: In Cahoots

UW-Madison MFA students use the process of collaboration as a tool for learning, understanding and growing. They explores the possibilities of drawing and figuration by examining the complexities of each other’s artistic styles, responding to each piece of art as it changes through the process of collaboration, creating a synthesis of different mediums, styles and concepts. The diversity of materials, ideas and techniques reflects the exploratory nature of the show, which aims to create a body of work that embodies the strengths of a diverse group of artists while calling into question the idea of ownership, authorship, and individualism.

Haiku Double Vision

Four artists, along with local poet, CX Dillhunt, combine their original prints, drawings, and photographs with selected haiku to create paired and combined works that reflect the universal themes of nature, diversity, and integration.

 

Gallery III

Oakwood Village Retirement Community

Believing that expressing oneself through art, music or writing is an opportunity that should be explored by all ages, Oakwood village supports self-expression through the creation of art and music.  This exhibit has grown out of Oakwood’s Art Therapy program, and combines works in a variety of media by both first-time and long established artists.

FOURum is a group of four Madison-area artists, who united to represent the diverse use of media and style from painting and drawing to monotype and printmaking.

Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission

 

The Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission is an active grantmaking, programming and publishing division of county government.  Earning a reputation as one of the smallest but successful arts agencies in the nation, it celebrates its thirtieth anniversary of community service in 2007.

Spectacle Research Laboratories, Murmur

Spectacle Research Laboratories is an art collective based in Madison, WI.

This interdisciplinary group counts among its members artists, musicians, scientists, business owners, and academics.  The members contribute to projects in a variety of ways – from design to construction, from writing and image production to performance.  Spectacle’s mission is to create collaborative performance events, inter-active environments, and media art.

ArtTribe, Exploring Carmina Burana

 

A collective group of Madison Area artists has existed for more than a year, meeting regularly for art critique, education and the group show preparation discussions.  Eleven professional and dedicated artists of different age and artistic background work in a wide range of various media.  

 

Gallery II:

Cherokee Middle School, Drive by Press

 

Cherokee Middle School has invited Joseph Velasquez and Greg Nanney, two UW–Madison graduate printmaking students to give a lecture, demonstration and print with the 8th grade students in the fall of 2006.  The visiting artists will provide the printmaking equipment to produce the prints.  During this collaborative process, students will broaden their artistic vocabulary, learn about graphic techniques, and create their own linoleum block prints, which will be on display at the Overture Gallery.  This project is designed for the 8th grade social studies and language art study of the Holocaust.

 

Gallery III

UW – Madison Incoming Graduate Students, Freely Bleeding

 

This diverse group of incoming MFA art students was formed in an effort to create a professional connection with academic peers at the art program.  The group members’ artistic interests include installation work based on printmaking, lithography and wood block prints, charcoal and ink, oil painting, photography and mixed media work such as stitching and found objects.

Center for Photography at Madison, Kingdom of Animals

 

This juried exhibit will present about 40 photographic images that illustrate the beauty, uniqueness, humor, grace and characteristics of different animals.  The works will reflect a fresh look at a subject matter, which is too often reduced to cliché. 

 

Gallery II

Capitol Artists, A Spectrum of Wisconsin Porcelain Artists

 

The exhibit will present a large collection of unique porcelain paintings selected for their creativity, composition and excellent craftsmanship. 

 

Gallery III

VSA Open Doors Studio, Artists Gathering

 

The exhibit will showcase two-dimensional works from painting and drawing to the paper arts and mixed media created by ten Madison area artists.  This show will reflect the artistic and creative exchange between emerging and established local artists.  Exhibiting artists will display individual and collaborative pieces in the show. 

 

Open Art Studios Cycle: September 24 – October 12, 2007

MaOAS: Madison-area Open Art Studios

Madison-area Open Art Studios is an annual art event that brings together Dane County emerging, mid-career and professional artists.   MaOAS is a free self-guided tour through the Madison-area art studios.  All exhibiting artists will be given an equal opportunity to participate in this event without competition or compromise to their artistic values.   The participants will exhibit one work in one of the three Overture Galleries.  The public is invited to attend this annual citywide arts event, which celebrates the diversity and vitality of the visual arts.  This exhibit will provide visitors the opportunity to see participants’ work and to decide which art studio to visit.  The event will begin in conjunction with Madison’s Fall Gallery Night, on Friday, October 5 2007.  The open artists’ studios maps and tour guides will be available at the Overture Center Information Desk and in the Galleries.

Madison Watercolor Society, Borders and Barriers

The two local watercolor painters, Edward and Wilmer Anderson, founded the Madison Watercolor Society in 1983.  There are thirty-five members of the Watercolor Society who promote and support watercolor painting, assist each other in the development of high quality work.  The Society’s membership is awarded by a juried process.  The Watercolor Society also schedules annual workshops with nationally known artists.

On the Borderline, Capturing the Light

On The Borderline project has been in existence for eight years and was inspired by Mary Pipher’s book in which examines the issue of the transition period from girlhood to womanhood.  Piper described this period as a “border” between adulthood and childhood that has richness and diversity unmatched by any other life stage.  This project aims to increase girls’ self-esteem by using the camera as a personal visual tool in exploring their changing view of themselves and their surrounding world. 

The exhibit will showcase classic black and white and color digital photographs created by 15 adolescents from the Girl Neighborhood Power sites and the Madison Public Schools.

Tracks and Traces: Drawing from Experience

Tracks and Traces brings together the work of four Madison artists who access the language of kinetic mark making as a way to record their emotional and physical experiences. 

Teresa Getty combines sweeping gestural mark with minutely rendered fantasy landscapes, objects and characters.  Sara Schneckloth generates imagined biological figures and environments.  Sarah Mathison weaves real characters into fictional narratives.  Tara Mathison works with mixed media collages, creating extravagant visual relationships.

Clay and fiber art are related through their hands-on, process-oriented approaches.  CLAY:fiber, a collective of Madison area artists who work in these media, is organized to share resources, network, and find and create exhibition opportunities.

Collectif Momentum is an organization of Madison artists who span a spectrum of styles, media and experiences. The diversity of this artists’ cooperative creates a language for viewers to decipher.

Situated in the context of contemporary art and theory, Over Oceans’ practice encompasses many non-traditional media. The group’s purpose is to expand its members’ horizons as art makers and to reach individuals and communities both within and outside of the traditional art audience.

On the Borderline Project: On the Borderline Project

The project teaches adolescent girls how to use basic photographic skills to explore their changing views of themselves and their world.  Participating artists use their knowledge of the technical and aesthetic aspects of photography to then shape their viewers’ perceptions.

World Of Wonder: Behind the Scenes of Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse

Children's Theater of Madison

The focus of this dramaturgical exhibit for Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse is adaptation.  Through text, illustrations, artist renderings, 3-D stage scenic models and costumes, the exhibit takes the viewer through the creative process of adaptation, from conept to reality. Original artwork by Kevin Henkes; costume designs by Sarah Hunt-Frank and Stefani Lincecum.

AIDS Memorial Quilt

World AIDS Day 2009 ~ Remembering history to shape the future.  The AIDS Memorial Quilt is an expanding memorial to the lives of people lost to HIV/AIDS, created by those who loved them. It is the largest community art project in the world, totaling more than 45,500 individual panels that commemorate more than 91,000 people.

 

The viewing of the AIDS Memorial Quilt is made possible by UW HIV/AIDS Comprehensive Care Program.
