The best traditional performers treat their art as a living thing, constantly seeking to keep the tradition moving forward. Kodo—whose name can mean both “heartbeat” and “children of the drum”— strives to both preserve and re-interpret traditional Japanese performance as they explore the limitless possibilities of the Japanese drum, the taiko. Blending theater, music and movement, Kodo presents a sound that, in the words of the New York Times, “is a matter of flesh and blood, wood and stretched skin.” Each Kodo performance is a celebration of rhythm, power and finesse.
